A 55-year-old man died under tragic circumstances today following the explosion of an electric scooter battery inside his residence. The incident has once again raised serious concerns over the safety of lithium-ion batteries and the protocols followed during the charging of Electric Vehicles (EVs) at home.
The Incident According to local reports and eyewitness accounts, the victim was at home when the incident occurred during the early hours of the morning.
-
The Explosion: The electric scooty’s battery had reportedly been put on charge inside a room. Neighbors were startled by a deafening blast followed by a thick cloud of smoke and fire.
-
The Victim: The 55-year-old man, who was in close proximity to the charging unit, sustained severe burn injuries and inhaled toxic fumes. He was rushed to a nearby hospital by family members and neighbors, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
-
Damage: The intensity of the blast was such that the window panes of the room were shattered, and the interior walls sustained significant fire damage.
Preliminary Investigation Fire department officials and a forensic team visited the site to ascertain the cause of the malfunction.
-
Overheating Suspected: Preliminary findings suggest that the battery may have overheated due to a faulty charging circuit or an incompatible charger.
-
Ventilation Issues: Officials noted that charging the battery in a confined space with poor ventilation might have exacerbated the thermal runaway process.
-
Manufacturer Probe: The local police have impounded the remains of the scooter and the battery. They are in the process of contacting the EV manufacturer to investigate if there was a manufacturing defect in the battery pack.
Safety Advisory Following the tragedy, local authorities have issued a fresh advisory for EV owners:
-
Never charge unattended: Avoid charging EV batteries overnight or while sleeping.
-
Proper Ventilation: Ensure batteries are charged in open or well-ventilated areas.
-
Use Original Chargers: Always use the manufacturer-provided charger and avoid third-party replacements.
-
Monitor for Heat: If the battery feels excessively hot while charging, disconnect it immediately and contact a service center.
The police have registered a case under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and are awaiting the final forensic report.
