Gidderbaha Man and Mother Found Shackled; Allegations Point to Debt or Internal Family Feud

GIDDERBAHA – A disturbing incident unfolded at Madhir village in the Gidderbaha Assembly segment on Thursday when local residents rescued Nirmal Singh (45) and his mother, Jaswinder Kaur, after finding them shackled at their residence. Nirmal’s wife, son, and daughter also reside in the same house.

The villagers who facilitated the rescue alleged that the inhuman treatment was meted out to the duo at the behest of a local commission agent to whom Nirmal owed money.

Conflicting Accounts

Nirmal Singh alleged that he had borrowed ₹45,000 from commission agent Darshan Singh and was held captive and chained since October 13, despite being willing to repay the amount.

However, Harman Singh, Darshan Singh’s son, fiercely refuted the allegations, offering a counter-narrative:

  1. He stated that Nirmal had borrowed a higher amount of ₹75,000 and had started working for their firm to repay the debt.
  2. Harman alleged that Nirmal was caught in two separate theft cases (including stealing a mobile phone) and was sent back home days ago.
  3. He claimed that Nirmal’s wife and relatives were the ones who restrained him and his mother with chains because Nirmal frequently drank and quarreled with his family, who was supported by his mother.

Harman asserted that the family was being falsely blamed, suggesting the shackling was a measure of restraint taken by Nirmal’s own family members due to his volatile behavior.
