Kunjpura Granted Municipal Committee Status; 3 Villages Merged to Form New Civic Body

Aug 3, 2025 | Haryana

In a major administrative restructuring aimed at boosting urbanization and civic infrastructure, the Haryana government on August 3 officially constituted the Kunjpura Municipal Committee. The notification, issued by the Department of Urban Local Bodies, marks the end of the Gram Panchayat era for the historic town and its adjoining areas, ushering in a new phase of urban governance.

🏙️ The Constitution: 3 Villages Merged According to the government notification, the new Municipal Committee (MC) has been formed by merging the limits of three distinct revenue estates:

  1. Kunjpura

  2. Bazidpur

  3. Nalwi Kalan

This consolidation brings a significant population and area under the ambit of the municipal body, enabling integrated planning and development.

📜 End of Panchayat Rule With this notification, the existing Gram Panchayats of Kunjpura, Bazidpur, and Nalwi Kalan stand dissolved.

  • Administrator Appointed: Until the first municipal elections are held, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Karnal, has been appointed as the Administrator to oversee the affairs of the newly formed committee.

  • Assets & Liabilities: All assets, funds, and liabilities of the former panchayats have now been transferred to the Kunjpura Municipal Committee.

🏗️ Expectations of Development Residents have welcomed the move, hoping it will solve chronic issues that the panchayats struggled to address due to limited funds. “We expect better street lights, a proper sewage system, and regular garbage collection now that we are a city,” said a local shopkeeper near the Kunjpura Fort.

The upgrade allows Kunjpura to access funds under urban schemes like AMRUT and Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), which were previously inaccessible to rural bodies.
