The Haryana government has reached out to meat processing units and slaughterhouses across the state, requesting a voluntary shutdown to honor the Jain festival of Paryushana Parva. Unlike a mandatory ban, the communication is framed as a “sensitive appeal” to maintain social harmony and respect religious sentiments.
-
Official Communication: The Directorate of Urban Local Bodies sent letters to all District Municipal Commissioners and Commissioners of Municipal Corporations. The directive asked them to issue appeals to slaughterhouses to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle from August 20 to August 28, 2025.
-
Significance of Paryushana: For the Jain community, these nine days are dedicated to intensive fasting, repentance, and the practice of Ahimsa. It is a period where followers seek forgiveness (Michhami Dukkadam) for any harm caused to living beings.
-
Voluntary Nature: Government sources clarified that the appeal is not a legally binding order but a routine request that has been made in previous years as well. Most private slaughterhouses in Jain-populated areas often comply voluntarily as a gesture of communal respect.
-
Political Context: The appeal comes amid similar discussions in other states, where courts have recently debated the balance between religious sentiments and the constitutional right to carry on trade and business.
