The sounds of diesel engines will soon become a thing of the past on the Rewari-Bhatinda line, as the Indian Railways moves toward its goal of 100% electrification.
-
Project Status: As of today, the OHE (Overhead Equipment) wiring has been completed for over 95% of the stretch. Final safety inspections by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) are scheduled for the last week of November.
-
Key Benefits:
-
Speed Boost: Electric locomotives can accelerate much faster than diesel counterparts, allowing for a 15-minute to 30-minute reduction in travel time for express trains.
-
Operational Efficiency: It removes the bottleneck of “engine switching” for trains coming from electrified sections of the Delhi-Jaipur or Delhi-Amritsar routes.
-
Cost Savings: The switch is estimated to save crores in annual fuel costs while contributing to India’s “Net Zero” emission target.
-
-
Impact on Freight: This section is vital for the movement of food grains from Punjab and Haryana and coal transport. Electrification will allow for heavier and longer freight trains (Long-Haul) to run at higher speeds.
-
Connectivity Milestone: “This was the last remaining gap in the regional electrified network. By November-end, we will have a seamless electric corridor from Southern Haryana all the way to Bathinda and beyond,” said a senior NWR official.
Community Sentiment
“For years, our trains were slow because they had to wait for diesel engines or were limited by older technology. Full electrification means better connectivity for students going to Hisar or Bhatinda and for traders moving goods. It’s a long-awaited development that puts our region on the modern rail map,” said a regular traveler from Sirsa.
