The growing menace of unregulated online gambling has claimed another young life in Hisar, leaving a family devastated and the local community in shock.
-
The Spiral of Debt: The deceased, a second-year B.Com student, had reportedly become addicted to a specific “prediction-based” betting app over the last three months. According to his roommates, he started with small amounts but soon lost a substantial sum of ₹50,000—money intended for his semester fees and hostel expenses.
-
The Final Act: Unable to face his parents and under pressure from the app’s local “collection agents” to return borrowed credits, the student ended his life late last night. A suicide note recovered from the spot purportedly mentions the mental torture he faced due to the mounting debt.
-
Police Investigation: The Hisar Police have acted swiftly, booking three individuals identified as local promoters/agents of the betting platform under Section 108 (Abetment of Suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). “We have tracked the UPI transactions through which the money was deposited. These apps operate in a grey area, but the agents who lure students into debt traps will not be spared,” a senior police official stated.
-
Cyber Cell Alert: The district’s Cyber Cell is now working to block the specific URL of the app and has initiated a “Financial Literacy” drive in local colleges to warn students about the psychological and financial risks of “Easy Money” apps.
-
Parental Advisory: Authorities have urged parents to monitor their children’s digital transactions and look for signs of behavioral changes, such as social withdrawal or sudden demands for large sums of money.
