The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is reportedly in the final stages of attaching the campus and associated assets of Al Falah University, located in Dhauj, Faridabad. This action is being taken under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) following an extensive investigation into the financial dealings of the institution’s management and its trust.
The Investigation The move to attach the university campus comes after the ED gathered evidence suggesting that “proceeds of crime” were used in the acquisition of the land and the construction of the university infrastructure.
-
Allegations: The investigation centers on alleged financial irregularities involving the diversion of funds. It is suspected that funds were channeled through a network of shell companies and subsequently integrated into the university’s development projects.
-
Scope of Attachment: The proposed provisional attachment order is expected to cover several acres of land, administrative blocks, and academic buildings. Once the order is issued, the university management will be restricted from transferring or selling the property until the legal proceedings are concluded.
Background of the Case The ED’s probe was initiated based on FIRs previously registered by other agencies, including the CBI or state police, regarding alleged cheating, forgery, and criminal conspiracy. The central agency has been scrutinizing the university’s bank statements, audit reports, and funding sources for several months. Multiple rounds of searches were conducted at the residences and offices of the university’s key trustees and administrators earlier last year.
Impact on Education While the attachment of the physical property is a legal measure to secure “proceeds of crime,” authorities typically allow educational activities to continue under a court-appointed administrator or strictly monitored conditions to ensure that the students’ futures are not jeopardized. However, the news has caused a wave of anxiety among the student body and faculty regarding the long-term stability of the institution.
Current Status Legal representatives for Al Falah University have previously denied any wrongdoing, stating that the institution has complied with all regulatory and financial norms. The university is expected to challenge any attachment order before the PMLA Adjudicating Authority once the formal notice is served.
