In a major push to overhaul the city’s sanitation infrastructure, the Haryana government has approved a comprehensive ₹37-crore road sweeping project for Rohtak. The initiative, sanctioned by the High-Powered Works Purchase Committee under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, aims to mechanise and streamline cleanliness operations across the Municipal Corporation (MC) area for the next five years.
Project Scope & Operations
Mayor Ramavatar Valmiki announced that the new system will officially commence on February 6.
-
Workforce & Machinery: A private firm has been engaged to execute the project, deploying over 300 sanitation workers. The fleet will include multiple tractor-trailers and advanced mechanised sweeping machines to cover all major city roads.
-
Night Sweeping: A key feature of this upgrade is the introduction of night sweeping, specifically targeting busy market areas and high-traffic zones to ensure they are clean before morning rush hours.
-
Current Deficit: MC officials noted that the project fills a critical gap, as the existing MC staff numbers were insufficient to cover the city’s expanding area effectively.
Strategic Goals
Dr. Anand Kumar Sharma, MC Commissioner, highlighted the broader objectives of the initiative:
-
Aesthetics & Health: The project aims to prevent garbage accumulation on thoroughfares, public spaces, and commercial hubs, creating a healthier urban environment.
-
Survey Rankings: The consistent, mechanised cleaning is expected to significantly boost Rohtak’s performance in upcoming national cleanliness surveys (Swachh Survekshan).
Citizen Helpline
To ensure accountability, the MC authorities have appealed for public cooperation and released dedicated helpline numbers. Residents can report uncollected waste from homes or shops by calling:
