In a bizarre yet heartwarming incident in Ambala City, a ten-day-old puppy was finally reunited with its mother after being held hostage by a male monkey for nearly eight hours. The drama unfolded in the Old Grain Market area, where residents watched helplessly as the primate carried the tiny canine across rooftops and tall trees, refusing to let go despite multiple attempts by locals to intervene.
According to Bharat Singh, the founder of the local animal welfare charity Vande Mataram Dal (VMD), the situation began late Monday night when they received a distress call about the unusual abduction. The monkey had snatched the puppy from its mother and was seen leaping from house to house. “We observed that the male monkey was holding the puppy carefully, but it was dangerous because they were at a good height,” Singh explained. The situation was dire as the puppy had been without food for hours and was crying continuously, while its distressed mother waited anxiously on the ground below.
Realizing that force would only endanger the small animal, the seven-member VMD rescue team devised a strategic plan involving food. They placed a safety net around the base of the tree where the monkey had perched and used bananas and fruit juice to divert its attention. The strategy paid off when the monkey, tempted by the offering, reached out to grab the fruit juice. In that split second of distraction, the monkey released its grip, and the puppy fell.
Saurabh, a VMD volunteer who was positioned close to the tree, managed to catch the puppy safely before it hit the ground. The rescue operation, which lasted several tense hours, ended with the puppy being successfully reunited with its mother and siblings. Bharat Singh noted that while his team has been rescuing injured animals in the district for over 13 years, this was the first time they had encountered such a peculiar case of a monkey “kidnapping” a puppy.
