With the Ambala Municipal Corporation (MC) elections on the horizon, political activity has intensified in the district. Both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the main opposition Congress have formally kickstarted their candidate selection process, inviting applications from ticket aspirants for the posts of Mayor and Ward Councillors until February 5.
The Congress party has appointed observers to ensure a transparent selection process. Parvinder Pal Pari, the district coordinator, stated that party observers will be present at the Congress Bhawan in Ambala City on February 4 and 5 to accept applications. Aspirants have been asked to submit their biodata along with the necessary details to the appointed committee. The party aims to field strong candidates capable of challenging the ruling dispensation on issues of civic neglect and development.
Simultaneously, the BJP has also geared up for the contest. The party’s district unit has directed interested workers to submit their applications to the district president or the designated election in-charges by the February 5 deadline. BJP leaders emphasized that tickets will be distributed based on “winnability” and the candidate’s track record of public service. The party is banking on its “double-engine” government’s development works to retain its stronghold in the civic body.
Both parties are holding back-to-back meetings to strategize for the polls. While the BJP is highlighting its infrastructure projects, the Congress is focusing on anti-incumbency factors, including sanitation and property tax grievances. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has also announced its intention to contest the MC polls, making the upcoming battle a potential triangular contest.
