Barwala Bird Flu: Poultry Samples Test Positive; Mass Culling Begins

Dec 26, 2025 | Haryana

Panic gripped the Barwala-Raipur Rani poultry belt, one of the largest in Asia, as samples from a local farm tested positive for H5N1 Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) today. The district administration has moved swiftly to contain the outbreak, ordering the immediate culling of birds in the affected zone.

  • The Confirmation: The scare began earlier this week when a high number of sudden bird deaths were reported at a private poultry farm. Samples sent to the Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (RDDL) and subsequently to the High Security Animal Disease Laboratory (HSADL), Bhopal, returned positive for the highly pathogenic Avian Influenza virus today.

  • Culling Operations: Following the “Action Plan for Prevention, Control and Containment of Avian Influenza,” the Department of Animal Husbandry has ordered:

    • 1-km Radius Culling: All poultry birds within a 1-kilometer radius of the infected farm (the “Infected Zone”) will be culled starting tomorrow morning.

    • Deep Burial: Specialized teams equipped with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits will handle the culling and ensure deep burial of the carcasses to prevent further spread.

  • Containment Measures:

    • Surveillance Zone: A 10-kilometer radius around the epicenter has been declared a “Surveillance Zone.” The movement of poultry, eggs, and manure out of this area has been strictly prohibited.

    • Sanitization: Intensive sanitization and disinfection drives have been launched in all nearby farms.

  • Impact on Poultry Industry: The news has sent shockwaves through the local industry. Egg and chicken prices in the tricity (Chandigarh, Panchkula, Mohali) and neighboring states are expected to fluctuate. Farmers have expressed concern over compensation, while the government has assured that relief will be provided as per established norms.

  • Human Safety: The Health Department has started a door-to-door survey of residents and farm workers within the infected zone to check for any symptoms of influenza-like illness (ILI). People are advised to consume only well-cooked poultry products (heated to 70°C or above).

  • Official Statement: “We are following the central government’s protocol to the letter. There is no need for panic, but high vigilance is required. Our rapid response teams are on the ground,” said the Director of the Animal Husbandry Department.
