A massive fire destroyed a textile unit in Panipat’s industrial sector today, causing a heavy financial blow to the local handloom industry. The factory, which produces bath mats and blankets for export, was nearly reduced to ashes within hours.
-
The Incident: The fire was reported on Sunday evening at approximately 6:15 PM. As the fire started, thick black smoke covered the sky, which could be seen from several kilometers away. Since it was a Sunday, most workers were not on duty, and only security staff were present on the premises.
-
Rapid Spread: The blaze grew out of control very fast because of the highly inflammable materials like polyester yarn and chemicals used in the factory. The flames reached the roof and walls of the building, making it difficult for the guards to put out the fire with hand extinguishers.
-
Firefighting Efforts: More than 10 fire engines from Panipat city and nearby areas were called to the spot. Later, additional fire tenders from the National Fertilizers Limited (NFL) were also brought in to help. It took several hours of hard work for the fire teams to finally control the flames.
-
Huge Loss: Factory owner Ajay Nath, who is based in Delhi, reached the spot after hearing the news. He informed that expensive machines, raw materials, and finished goods ready for export to countries like America and Europe were all destroyed. He estimated the total loss at around ₹4 crore.
-
Cause of Fire: Preliminary reports from the fire department suggest that an electrical short circuit in the factory’s main panel may have started the blaze.
Official Status: Police and fire officials have launched an investigation into the incident. No casualties or injuries have been reported so far, as the building was mostly empty when the fire started.
