Bio-Research Body Demands Dedicated Disaster Management Office In Yamunanagar

Jan 5, 2026 | Haryana

Highlighting the unique topographical and industrial vulnerabilities of the region, a prominent Bio-Research Body today officially moved a proposal demanding the immediate establishment of a permanent District Disaster Management Office (DDMO) in Yamunanagar.

  • The Core Demand: The research organization, specializing in environmental and biological risk assessment, argued that Yamunanagar’s current reliance on ad-hoc arrangements during crises is insufficient given its status as a high-risk zone.

  • Why Yamunanagar? The body cited several critical factors in its demand:

    • Industrial Density: As a hub for sugar mills, paper mills, and plywood industries, the risk of chemical leaks or industrial fires remains a persistent threat.

    • Flood Vulnerability: The presence of the Hathnikund Barrage and the Yamuna River makes the district susceptible to sudden flash floods during the monsoon.

    • Bio-Safety Concerns: With increasing research activities in the region, the body emphasized the need for a protocol to handle biological or environmental contamination.

  • Lack of Specialized Infrastructure: Currently, disaster response is handled by the general district administration and the fire department. The bio-research body pointed out that a dedicated DDMO would house specialized equipment, trained rescue personnel, and a 24/7 monitoring cell for real-time hazard mapping.

  • Technological Integration: The proposal suggests that the new office should be equipped with advanced weather monitoring systems and a digital database of all industrial chemicals stored within the district.

  • Administrative Response: Upon receiving the memorandum, district officials assured that the demand would be forwarded to the State Government and the Haryana State Disaster Management Authority (HSDMA) for serious consideration.

  • Expert Opinion: “Yamunanagar is a complex district with both natural and man-made risk factors. A dedicated office would not just be reactive but would work on ‘Preventive Management’ through regular mock drills and safety audits,” a spokesperson for the bio-research body stated.
