Canal Breach Submerges 100 Acres of Freshly Sown Fields in Fatehabad

A week of festive cheer turned into a nightmare for farmers in the Fatehabad district today as a structural failure in the local irrigation network led to widespread field flooding.

  • The Breach: Residents of the affected village were woken by the sound of rushing water around 3:00 AM. A minor canal, part of the Bhakra canal system, developed a significant crack that quickly expanded into a 25-foot wide breach.

  • Agricultural Impact: The timing of the breach is catastrophic for local agriculture. Farmers had taken advantage of the recent dip in temperature to sow high-yield mustard varieties. Over 100 acres are currently under 1 to 2 feet of water. Agronomists warn that if the water is not drained within 24 hours, the seeds will rot, forcing farmers to bear the cost of re-sowing.

  • Suspected Cause: While an official inquiry is pending, local farmers allege that the canal had not been de-silted properly and the embankments were weakened by rat burrows and lack of maintenance during the monsoon months.

  • Response Efforts: The Irrigation Department halted the water supply from the main headworks at 6:00 AM. JCB machines and local volunteers are currently working with sandbags to seal the gap. Revenue officials (Patwaris) have been dispatched to the site to begin the Girdawari (crop loss assessment) process.

“We invested thousands in seeds and fertilizers just last week. Seeing the fields look like a lake today is heartbreaking. By the time this water dries out, the ideal window for mustard sowing will be gone. We need the government to compensate us for the double expenditure we now face,” said a local farmer whose 5-acre plot was completely submerged.
