In a major recovery during a routine checking drive, the Chandigarh Police have arrested an Ambala-based resident after recovering 1.214 kg of gold and ₹1.42 crore in unaccounted cash from his vehicle. The seizure took place late Saturday night at a temporary checkpoint in the Industrial Area, Phase I.
The Interception Police teams stationed near the Colony Number-4 traffic light point flagged down a Honda Amaze car bearing a Haryana registration number for inspection.

Suspicious Behavior: The driver, identified as Jagmohan Jain, a jeweller from Ambala, reportedly hesitated to stop and attempted to take a wrong turn to evade the police, but was blocked by traffic.

The Recovery: Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered two bags. One contained 1.214 kg of gold (in the form of bars and bullion with ‘9999’ purity markings), valued at approximately ₹1.81 crore. The other bag contained ₹1.42 crore in cash.

Lack of Documents: When questioned, Jain claimed he was in Chandigarh to deliver the gold to sectors 8 and 22. However, he failed to produce any valid bills, transit permits, or documentation to prove the source of the high-value assets.

Agencies Involed: Given the magnitude of the recovery, the Chandigarh Police have formally handed the matter over to the Income Tax Department and are probing potential links to hawala transactions and tax evasion.
