In a major technological leap for law enforcement in Haryana, DGP Shatrujeet Kapur unveiled the first phase of the “Safe City” project today, turning Rohtak into a “smart-surveilled” zone dedicated to gender safety.

AI-Powered Vigilance: The 1,000 smart cameras are not merely recording devices; they “think” in real-time. The AI software is trained to identify distress patterns—such as a woman waving frantically or a group loitering near educational institutions during late hours. Upon detection, an automated alarm is raised at the ICCC, allowing for a police response time of under 5 minutes.
-
Safe Transport Integration: As part of the project, the DGP announced that all local autos and cabs will now feature QR-code based tracking. “Women can scan the code to share their live location with the police control room. This, combined with the AI camera network, creates a virtual safety corridor from the workplace to the doorstep,” the DGP stated.
-
Hotspot Mapping: The locations for the 1,000 cameras were chosen based on a “Safety Audit” conducted earlier this year, focusing on dark spots, bus stands, and outskirts near MDU and medical colleges. These areas will also see enhanced evening patrolling by “Durga Shakti” units.
-
Faceless Enforcement: The system includes an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) feature to track vehicles involved in eve-teasing or harassment. “We are moving toward a system where the offender is identified and challaned before they even reach home,” Kapur added.

“Walking home from my coaching center after 7:00 PM used to feel risky. Seeing these high-tech cameras at every junction and knowing they are being monitored by an AI that can recognize trouble gives us a lot of confidence. It’s the first time we feel like the police are looking out for us even when they aren’t physically visible,” said a postgraduate student at Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU).
