Dhanteras Rush: Jagadhri’s Utensil Market Hits Gridlock

Oct 18, 2025 | Haryana

The clang of metal and the honking of horns defined Jagadhri today as the city’s world-renowned utensil market turned into a sea of shoppers, rendering movement nearly impossible.

  • The Tradition: Jagadhri is famously known as the “Brass City” of India. Buying utensils here before Diwali is considered a ritual for thousands of families. “It’s not just about shopping; it’s a tradition. People believe that metal bought from the roots of Jagadhri brings better luck,” said a veteran trader from the Metal Manufacturers Association.

  • The Traffic Nightmare: * Key Areas: Railway Road, Pattri Mohalla, and the Old Grain Market were the worst affected.

    • The Cause: The influx of heavy SUVs and tractor-trolleys from neighboring rural pockets, combined with hundreds of temporary stalls set up on pavements, reduced the motorable width of the roads to just a few feet.

    • Gridlock: Commuters reported that a usually 5-minute stretch took over 45 minutes to cross during the afternoon rush.

  • Market Trends 2025: While brass remains the heritage choice, High-Grade Stainless Steel (304 grade) was the top seller today. Popular items included thalis, laser-engraved dinner sets, and traditional tokanis (water pots).

  • Economic Boom: Following a stagnant period, manufacturers are optimistic this year. “We are seeing bulk orders not just from domestic buyers but also from export houses. We expect the market to touch a ₹500-600 crore turnover by the end of the festive week,” stated Sunder Lal Batra, General Secretary of the Metal Association.

  • Police Struggle: Despite the deployment of 50 additional traffic personnel and “No Entry” zones for heavy vehicles, the sheer volume of pedestrians made vehicle management ineffective. Police have now requested residents to use rickshaws or walk to the market center starting tomorrow.

Official Warning: The Yamunanagar Administration has designated specific “No-Parking Zones” near the Jagadhri Bus Stand. Violators are being warned that cranes will be used to tow away vehicles obstructing the flow of ambulances or emergency services during the peak Dhanteras weekend (Oct 18-20).
