Expensive Smog Tower Non-Functional as Gurugram Chokes on 350 AQI

Oct 29, 2025 | Haryana

As the “Great Smog of 2025” continues to grip the Millennium City, the very infrastructure promised to provide relief has become a symbol of administrative apathy. The smog tower, touted as a technological savior during its inauguration, is currently nothing more than a silent concrete pillar.

  • Technical Paralysis: Sources within the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) indicate that the tower’s primary filtration system is currently clogged and requires a specialized “filter replacement” that has been delayed due to procurement issues.

  • Operational Costs vs. Efficiency: With an estimated monthly running cost of over ₹10-15 lakh, authorities are reportedly hesitant to activate the tower, citing recent studies that suggest it only provides “hyper-local” relief that is immediately negated by the city’s vast wind currents.

  • AQI Crisis: Today, monitoring stations at Vikas Sadan and Sector 51 recorded AQI levels of 353 and 318 respectively. The stagnant air and low wind speeds (under 3 kmph) have created a “lid effect,” trapping local pollutants and the incoming smoke from neighboring regions.

  • The “Display” Problem: Adding to the confusion, several digital display boards across the city that show real-time AQI were also found to be blank or showing outdated data, leaving citizens unaware of the actual toxicity of the air they breathe.

Community Sentiment

“We spent crores of taxpayers’ money on this tower. If it isn’t going to work when the AQI is 350, when exactly is it supposed to work? It’s a decorative piece of junk that offers zero protection to the people living right next to it,” said a spokesperson for a prominent Gurugram Residents’ Welfare Association (RWA).
