Haryana Education Department Mandates Winter Uniforms from December 1; Markets Surge as Parents Rush for Blazers

As the winter chill begins to set in across northern India, the Haryana government has moved to ensure student safety by standardizing the shift to winter apparel in schools.

  • The Directive: The Directorate of School Education has sent a formal communication to all District Education Officers (DEOs). According to the order, schools must transition to the winter dress code by Monday, December 1. While private schools have their specific blazers and cardigans, government school students will utilize the uniform subsidy provided by the state to procure their winter gear.

  • Market Frenzy: Following the announcement, markets in cities like Ambala, Panipat, and Gurugram witnessed a massive footfall. Shopkeepers reported that blazers and gray trousers were the most sought-after items. “The demand tripled within 24 hours. We are struggling to restock certain sizes of blazers for private schools,” said a prominent uniform retailer in Panipat.

  • Flexibility for Chilly Mornings: The department has also advised schools to be lenient with “brand-specific” sweaters if parents are unable to find them immediately, as long as the color matches. However, the use of proper blazers is being strictly encouraged for senior students.

  • Health Advisory: Medical experts have welcomed the move, noting that early mornings in December often see temperatures between 8°C and 11°C in Haryana. Proper woolen clothing is essential to prevent seasonal flu and respiratory issues among school-going children.
