Haryana Jails to Introduce Vedic Chanting and Yoga for Inmate Reform

Dec 8, 2025 | Haryana

In an effort to transform the atmosphere of Haryana’s correctional facilities from punitive to reformative, the state government has introduced a “wellness-centric” rehabilitation model for jail inmates.

  • Holistic Healing: The Home Minister stated that prison life often leads to high levels of aggression and depression. “Vedic chanting has a scientifically proven calming effect on the mind, and Yoga provides the physical discipline necessary for self-control. Our goal is to return these individuals to society as better human beings,” the Minister said.

  • Collaboration with Experts: The Prison Department will collaborate with specialized institutions and yoga foundations to provide certified trainers. Inmates who show exceptional proficiency in these practices may also be trained as “instructors,” allowing them to lead sessions for their peers and potentially opening up employment opportunities post-release.

  • Voluntary Participation: While the program is highly encouraged, it remains voluntary. However, jail authorities have indicated that regular participation in such reformative activities could be considered a positive factor during reviews for remission of sentences or parole applications.

  • Modernizing Jails: This initiative is part of a broader “Jail Reform 2025” roadmap, which also includes digital classrooms and vocational training in organic farming. The introduction of Vedic chanting is seen as a way to promote “internal peace” alongside external skills.

  • Implementation Schedule: The training sessions are scheduled to begin in the first week of January 2026. The department is also planning to set up dedicated “Dhyan Kendras” (Meditation Centers) within the jail premises to support this initiative.
