In a major overhaul of its state-run education system, the Haryana government announced on July 5, 2025, the full-fledged rollout of English-medium instruction in its Government Model Sanskriti Schools (GMSS) and other designated model schools. This move is designed to make public education competitive with private institutions and improve student proficiency in the global language.
๐ English Medium Mandate in Model Schools
The shift to English as the medium of instruction is part of a broader educational reform aimed at modernizing the stateโs schools. The Directorate of Secondary Education confirmed that classes in these specially designated model schools will now be conducted primarily in English, providing students with the fluency needed for higher education and professional careers.
Haryana has been working on establishing these premium ‘Model Schools’ (including the PM Shri Schools) with enhanced infrastructure, digital classrooms, and a focus on quality, which includes the English-medium mandate.
๐ Screening Test for 12,320 Teachers
To ensure the success of this pedagogical transition, the government has planned a rigorous screening process for the teaching staff. A special Screening Test is planned for approximately 12,320 existing government school teachers who have expressed interest or been shortlisted for deployment in the Model Sanskriti and PM Shri Schools.
The purpose of the exam is two-fold:
Assess Language Readiness: To evaluate the teachers’ proficiency in English, ensuring they are adequately prepared to teach subjects in the new medium of instruction.
Evaluate Competency: The test is part of a larger Deployment Policy that assigns weightage to both academic qualifications and a written screening test (often carrying 60% of the total selection score) to identify the most competent educators for these flagship schools.
The announcement on July 5th solidifies the government’s commitment to creating a dedicated cadre of highly skilled, English-proficient teachers for its elite model schools, setting a new benchmark for public education standards in Haryana.
