Haryana Police Issues New Patrol Directives for Monsoon Traffic

Jul 9, 2025 | Haryana

The Haryana Police and state Highway Patrol units received a fresh set of stringent guidelines on July 9, 2025, aimed at enhancing road safety and improving traffic management, with a specific focus on heavy vehicles during the ongoing monsoon season. The move is a response to the potential for increased accidents and traffic bottlenecks caused by rain-slicked roads and reduced visibility.

๐Ÿš› Monsoon Protocol for Heavy Vehicle Management

The new directives emphasize a proactive approach to prevent accidents involving heavy transport vehicles, which often face stability and braking challenges in wet conditions. Key instructions issued to police and patrol units include:

  • Speed Monitoring: Increased and stringent enforcement of speed limits for trucks, tankers, and other heavy commercial vehicles, especially on crucial national highways like the NH-44 (Delhi-Ambala) and the Western Peripheral Expressway (WPE).

  • Safety Checks: Regular, random checks to ensure heavy vehicles comply with safety requirements, including functional lights, wipers, and reflectors, which are essential for low-visibility monsoon driving.

  • Mandatory Parking Protocols: Strictly enforcing regulations that prohibit the haphazard parking of trucks on highway shoulders or in unlit areas, a common cause of nighttime rear-end collisions. Patrol units are instructed to immediately move or tow such vehicles.

  • Traffic Diversion: Clear protocols for traffic diversion and managing large convoys in the event of severe waterlogging or accidents, ensuring minimal disruption to the movement of goods and commuters.

๐Ÿšจ Patrol Readiness and Quick Response

The guidelines also focused on improving the operational readiness of the patrol units themselves. All Highway Patrol vehicles are required to be equipped with essential tools like cones, hazard lights, tow ropes, and first-aid kits to ensure a quick and effective response time to emergencies.

The ultimate objective of the new guidelines is to significantly reduce the rate of road accidents during the rainy season and ensure the smooth, safe flow of commercial and commuter traffic throughout Haryanaโ€™s extensive network of highways, which serves as a major gateway to North India.
