Smugglers on the KMP Expressway have resorted to creative camouflage to bypass security, but a tip-off led to one such sophisticated operation being dismantled today.
-
The Operation: Based on specific intelligence regarding a major liquor consignment moving toward a dry state, a specialized “naka” (checkpoint) was set up on the KMP Expressway. The police signaled a truck carrying Himachal-origin apple boxes to stop for a search.
-
The Discovery: Initially, the truck appeared to contain only fresh apples. However, when the top three layers of boxes were removed, a hollow space was found containing 500 cartons of premium English whiskey brands. The estimated market value of the seized liquor is over ₹35 lakh.
-
Modus Operandi: * The Cover: Smugglers used the strong scent of the apples and standard commercial transport documents for perishable goods to avoid suspicion at inter-state borders.
-
Destination: Interrogation revealed the stock was destined for Gujarat/Bihar, where it was to be sold at triple the market rate during the festive season.
-
-
Arrests: The driver and a helper, both residents of Rajasthan/Haryana, were arrested on the spot. They revealed that they were promised a “bonus” for the successful delivery of the “apple” load.
-
Police Action: A case has been registered at the local police station under the Haryana Excise Act. The police are now tracing the source of the liquor, suspected to be a distillery in Chandigarh.
Security Update: Police officials noted that the KMP and KGP expressways have become hotspots for such smuggling activities. “We have increased surveillance and are using thermal imaging and x-ray scanners at major toll points to detect hidden compartments in fruit and vegetable trucks,” stated a senior police officer.
