In response to the deteriorating condition of village connectivity following the onset of the monsoon, the Haryana Public Works Department (PWD) held a high-level review meeting on July 13, 2025, to fast-track development projects concerning the repair and widening of rural roads. The meeting was convened to address the immediate challenges posed by heavy rains, which have caused potholes and waterlogging damage in several districts.
๐ง Minister Reviews Damage Assessments
While presiding over the meeting in Chandigarh, senior PWD officials and the Public Works Minister reviewed the district-wise damage reports. The heavy rainfall in early July has significantly impacted the rural road network, particularly in the districts of Ambala, Yamunanagar, and Karnal.
Key decisions taken during the review included:
Priority Repairs: Officials were directed to identify critical rural links that have been severed or badly damaged and initiate patchwork and repair on a “war footing” to restore connectivity immediately.
Fast-Tracking Widening Projects: The government reiterated its commitment to widening narrow rural roads from 12 feet to 18 feet to accommodate increasing traffic. The review committee ordered the expedited processing of tenders for these widening projects, ensuring that administrative delays do not stall work once the rains subside.
Quality Control: A strict warning was issued to contractors regarding the quality of materials used. Officials emphasized that any road washed away due to substandard construction would lead to immediate blacklisting of the agency involved.
๐ง๏ธ Monsoon Action Plan
The department also discussed a Monsoon Action Plan, allocating a special contingency fund for emergency road repairs. The goal is to ensure that the “pothole-free Haryana” target is met swiftly after the monsoon season concludes.
The directives aim to provide relief to rural commuters and farmers, ensuring that the transportation of agricultural produce remains seamless despite the weather challenges.
