Haryana Shifts School Timings to 9:30 AM – 3:30 PM to Shield Students from Toxic Smog

Nov 4, 2025 | Haryana

As a dense blanket of toxic smog continues to shroud Northern India, the Haryana government has moved to adjust the daily routines of lakhs of school-going children to prioritize their health.

  • Revised Schedule: The new timings for single-shift schools are 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM. For double-shift schools, the first shift will now start later at 7:55 AM and conclude at 12:30 PM, while the second shift will run from 12:40 PM to 5:15 PM.

  • Health Rationale: Medical experts have warned that the concentration of PM2.5 and PM10 is highest during the early morning hours (6:00 AM – 9:00 AM) due to atmospheric temperature inversion. “By shifting the start time to 9:30 AM, we allow the sun to break through the smog layer slightly, reducing the direct inhalation of pollutants by children,” a state health official noted.

  • Winter Readiness: While the current change is primarily driven by air quality concerns, these timings are expected to stay in place throughout the winter season until February 15, 2026, to account for the upcoming cold wave and dense fog conditions.

  • District-Level Powers: Deputy Commissioners in the hardest-hit NCR districts—including Gurugram, Faridabad, and Sonipat—have been given additional powers to suspend physical classes for primary sections (Nursery to Class 5) if the AQI breaches the “Severe Plus” category.

Community Sentiment

“This is a much-needed relief. Waking up at 6:30 AM and waiting for the school bus in this grey, suffocating air was a nightmare for my 8-year-old. The 9:30 AM start is safer, though it does require some adjustments for working parents,” said a mother in Rohtak.
