Rohtak, often called the “Nursery of Champions,” lived up to its name today as the road to the National Games began with a tidal wave of rural ambition. The sheer volume of youth carrying kits and dreams turned the city’s sports infrastructure into a bustling arena of competition.
-
Rural Dominance: Coaches at the wrestling pits (Akhadas) reported that participation has nearly doubled compared to last year. “We are seeing kids coming from villages where there isn’t even a proper mat, yet their natural strength and technique are world-class,” said a senior wrestling coach.
-
Focus Disciplines: While Boxing and Wrestling remained the big draws, there was a surprising spike in interest for Archery and Shooting, areas where rural Haryana has recently started making international marks.
-
Selection Rigor: The trials are being monitored by high-performance directors using digital performance trackers. “We are looking for ‘raw power’ and ‘stamina’ that can be polished at our NCOEs. The top 5% from these trials will be drafted directly into specialized residential academies with 100% scholarship,” an official from the Directorate of Sports stated.
-
Logistical Challenge: The local administration had to set up temporary medical camps and food stalls to cater to the thousands of athletes and their parents. The Rohtak-Sonipat road saw heavy traffic throughout the morning as tractor-trolleys and buses filled with sports aspirants arrived at the venues.

“I traveled three hours on a bus from a village near the Rajasthan border. This trial is my only chance to get out of the fields and into a stadium. Seeing so many others like me is intimidating but also motivating—it shows that in Haryana, sports is not just a game; it’s a way of life,” said an 18-year-old sprinter from Bhiwani.
