Jeans and T-Shirts Banned in Haryana Govt Hospitals

In a move to bring a “private hospital-like” professional standard to state-run facilities, the Haryana Health Ministry has finalized the implementation of a comprehensive dress code policy across all government health institutions.

  • Professional Standards: The order specifically targets casual wear. Denim jeans (any color), t-shirts, sweatshirts, and skirts have been deemed inappropriate for a clinical environment. Staff are expected to wear formal clothes or their designated uniforms at all times, including weekends and night shifts.

  • Grooming Guidelines: The directive goes beyond clothing to include strict grooming standards:

    • Hair & Nails: Men’s hair must not exceed collar length, and “funky” or unconventional hairstyles are banned. Staff are required to keep nails trimmed and well-manicured.

    • Accessories: Heavy jewelry, loud makeup, and long nails are prohibited, as they can interfere with patient care and hygiene.

  • Footwear & Identification: Only formal black shoes are permitted; sneakers, slippers, and sandals are now off-limits. Additionally, every staff member must wear a clear nameplate displaying their designation to ensure transparency for patients.

  • Rationale: Health officials stated that the lack of a uniform dress code often leads to confusion in government hospitals, where it becomes difficult to identify authorized medical personnel. “A professional appearance builds trust and ensures discipline in a high-stakes environment like a hospital,” a senior department official noted.
