A wave of mourning has swept through Ghoghariya village in Jind district following the tragic death of a local youth in the United States. Sandeep Boora (37), who had immigrated to the US via the illegal “Donkey” route, reportedly drowned in a lake near Fresno, California.
๐ The Incident The tragedy occurred on August 4, 2025.
-
The Accident: Sandeep had gone to bathe in the King River (which feeds into a local lake) with friends. He reportedly got caught in strong currents and drowned. Despite being pulled out by rescue teams and receiving CPR for nearly 25 minutes, he could not be revived.
-
The Journey: Family members revealed that Sandeep had left for the US about two and a half years ago in search of a better livelihood. The family had taken a heavy loan to pay agents for the treacherous “Donkey Route.”
๐ Family’s Appeal The news reached the village on August 6, leaving the family devastated.
-
Repatriation Plea: Sandeepโs brother, Pradeep, and his elderly father, Ramkala, have appealed to the State and Central governments for assistance. “We do not have the resources to bring him back. We beg the government to help us bring his body home for the final rites,” his brother stated.
-
Background: Sandeep is survived by his wife and two children, who reside in his in-laws’ village, Ghaso.
๐ The “Donkey” Menace This incident has once again highlighted the perils of illegal immigration. Thousands of youths from Haryana, particularly from districts like Jind, Kaithal, and Karnal, risk their lives on this dangerous route through South American jungles to reach the US, often facing detention, deportation, or death.
