The ongoing friction between the state administration and farmers over crop residue management took a violent turn today, resulting in the arrest of five individuals and a heightened police presence in the rural belts of Kaithal.

The Incident: Around 2:30 PM, a fire tender was dispatched to a field where a large plume of smoke was detected via satellite monitoring. Upon arrival, the fire brigade personnel were blocked by a group of farmers who insisted on burning the residue for a quick turnaround for the wheat crop. The situation escalated quickly into stone-pelting, forcing the fire team to retreat and call for police backup.

Law Enforcement Action: A heavy police contingent led by the DSP reached the spot and identified the primary instigators. The five arrested individuals have been remanded to judicial custody. “Attacking those who are trying to protect the environment and public health is a serious offense. We will not allow the rule of law to be challenged,” stated the Kaithal SP.

The “Red Entry” Warning: In addition to the criminal charges, the Agriculture Department has initiated the process of making ‘Red Entries’ in the land records of the involved farmers. This measure will bar them from selling their crops at MSP or receiving government subsidies for the next two years.

Safety Concerns: The Fire Department has expressed concern over the safety of its staff. “Our teams are already under pressure during this season. Being attacked by the very people whose environment we are trying to save is demoralizing,” said a senior fire official.
Community Sentiment
“While we do not support violence, the frustration among farmers is real. The machines are not reaching everyone on time, and the pressure to sow wheat is mounting. However, attacking the fire brigade is wrong; they are just workers doing their jobs. This incident has unfortunately created a climate of fear in the village,” said a local farmer representative who was not involved in the clash.
