Man Fakes Wife’s Death for Insurance Claim While She is Alive

The Sirsa police have registered a case of fraud and forgery against a local resident who allegedly attempted to swindle an insurance company by declaring his living wife dead. The audacious scam came to light when the insurance provider conducted a field verification and found the “deceased” woman performing her daily household chores.

  • The Plot: The accused, a resident of a village in the Sirsa district, had taken out a significant life insurance policy in his wife’s name. Seeking a quick payout, he allegedly forged a death certificate from a neighboring state and submitted a formal claim to the insurance office.

  • The Verification Fail: Standard operating procedures for high-value claims require an independent physical verification. When the insurance investigators visited the address mentioned in the documents, they were stunned to find the woman very much alive.

  • Modus Operandi: Investigations suggest the man used sophisticated editing software or a fake seal from a local municipal body to create the counterfeit document. He had claimed she died of a “sudden cardiac arrest” to avoid the need for a post-mortem report.

  • Legal Consequences: Sirsa Police have booked the individual under sections related to Cheating (Section 420), Forgery (Section 467/468), and Using forged documents as genuine (Section 471) of the IPC (now BNS).

Official Statement: “This is a classic case of greed leading to criminal activity. We are investigating if any local officials were involved in helping him procure the fake seals or signatures used in the forged certificate,” said a senior Sirsa Police official.
