The bustling industrial corridors of Udyog Vihar witnessed heavy administrative action today as MCG enforcement teams, accompanied by police personnel, moved from building to building to execute sealing orders against major tax defaulters.
-
Targeting High-Value Defaulters: The properties sealed today include large industrial units, corporate offices, and mixed-use commercial buildings in Udyog Vihar Phase-I, III, and IV. According to MCG records, some of these units have not paid a single rupee in property tax for over five years, with individual arrears ranging from ₹15 lakh to over ₹80 lakh.
-
The Enforcement Process: “We are not targeting small shops or residential units in this phase. Our focus is on large commercial entities that have ignored our legal notices,” said a senior official from the MCG taxation wing. The teams placed official seals on the main entry points of the 20 identified buildings, effectively halting all business operations inside.
-
Fiscal Pressure: The drive comes as the MCG aims to meet its ambitious revenue target for the current financial year. Officials noted that property tax is the primary source of funding for city infrastructure, and persistent defaults have hampered ongoing road and drainage projects in the Udyog Vihar area itself.
-
The “Pay or Face Auction” Ultimatum: MCG Commissioner warned that if the dues—including the accumulated 18% annual interest—are not cleared within the next 30 days, the corporation will move to attach the properties and put them under the hammer. “The law allows us to auction these properties to recover public money. Sealing is the last step before we lose ownership rights of the defaulter,” he added.
-
On-the-Spot Recovery: Interestingly, the sight of the sealing team prompted several neighboring property owners to immediately deposit their pending taxes via the online portal. The MCG reported a localized collection of nearly ₹45 lakh in “on-the-spot” payments during today’s operation.
Context: Udyog Vihar, being one of the oldest industrial estates in Gurugram, has a high density of commercial tax disputes. Today’s action is part of a broader city-wide campaign to recover nearly ₹200 crore in outstanding property tax from the top 500 defaulters across all four zones.
