The ‘Mera Bill Mera Adhikar’ initiative is gaining massive traction in Haryana, as the state government today rewarded honest consumers with substantial cash prizes.
-
Encouraging the “Bill Culture”: The ceremony, held at the state headquarters, highlighted the importance of consumers asking for GST bills. Officials noted that demanding a bill is not just a right but a responsibility that ensures the tax paid by the consumer reaches the government treasury.
-
The Prize Pool: A total of ₹1 crore was distributed among various winners. This included two grand prizes of ₹10 lakh each, followed by several smaller prizes of ₹10,000 and ₹1 lakh. The winners came from diverse backgrounds, including students, homemakers, and small-scale traders from districts like Karnal, Ambala, and Faridabad.
-
Impact on Revenue: A senior official from the Excise and Taxation Department stated that since the scheme’s intensification, the number of B2C (Business to Consumer) invoices being generated has seen a sharp uptick. “When consumers demand bills, it forces retailers to bring their sales into the formal economy, directly boosting the state’s GST collection,” the official added.
-
How it Works: Under the scheme, citizens can upload GST invoices for purchases above ₹200 on the ‘Mera Bill Mera Adhikar’ app or portal. Each uploaded bill serves as an entry into the monthly and quarterly lucky draws.
-
Future Extension: Encouraged by the response, the department is planning to launch a special awareness drive in rural Haryana to educate small shopkeepers and villagers about the benefits of digital billing.
