LUDHIANA – In a shocking and tragic case, a woman from SBS Nagar, Ludhiana, has been accused of selling her newborn child for ₹2.5 lakh while her husband was on his deathbed in Agra. The case of the Ludhiana newborn sold has sent shockwaves through the community and highlights the dark reality of human trafficking.

The accused, identified as Rita, allegedly conducted the illegal transaction on July 15, the day her male child was born at the Government Hospital in Jawadi. According to the complaint filed by her father-in-law, Gajraj Singh, Rita informed him that the child was a “dead girl,” while telling her husband, Sunny, that a “stillborn male child” had been born. This contradictory statement raised suspicion, especially after Sunny died on July 21 in Agra.

Gajraj Singh’s suspicions turned into belief after he reviewed call recordings and made inquiries at various hospitals. He claims he was forced to go from “pillar to post” for two months to get the accused booked. The FIR, which names Rita, her mother Prema Devi, ASHA worker Renu, and a PRO of a private hospital, was only registered after social activists and office bearers, led by Sarpanch Sanjay Tewari, intervened and threatened agitation.

Dugri SHO Ravinder Singh confirmed that the FIR was registered under sections 143(4) and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) after police were provided with corroborating evidence. The investigating team, led by Balbir Singh, has initiated a probe, but no arrests have been made as the accused are currently absconding.
