The aspirational district of Nuh has received a significant gift in the field of higher education, with the government finally approving the long-pending demand to increase medical seats in the region.
-
Expanding the Horizon: The approval for 100 new seats brings the total annual MBBS intake at SHKM Medical College to a higher capacity, effectively providing more opportunities for local students and those across Haryana to pursue medical careers. “This is not just about numbers; it’s about ensuring that a district like Nuh, which has historically faced healthcare challenges, produces its own doctors,” said a senior health official.
-
Infrastructure Upgrade: To support the additional 100 students, the state government has sanctioned funds for the construction of a new academic block, high-tech lecture theaters, and a multi-story boys’ and girls’ hostel. The college’s associated hospital will also see an expansion in bed capacity to meet the clinical training requirements for the increased student strength.
-
Boosting Local Healthcare: This move is expected to have a “trickle-down” effect on the district’s healthcare system. More medical students mean more junior residents and interns available for patient care at the SHKM hospital, which serves as the primary tertiary care center for the entire Mewat region.
-
Recruitment of Faculty: The Medical Education Department has also initiated a drive to recruit additional professors and assistant professors to maintain the required teacher-student ratio as per NMC guidelines.
-
Vision 2030: The Chief Minister noted that this seat increase is part of the larger vision to have a medical college in every district of Haryana. By strengthening the Nuh college, the government aims to bridge the rural-urban healthcare divide.
