In a major push for road safety and traffic discipline, the Kurukshetra District Police have revealed that they issued more than 2.40 lakh challans to traffic violators throughout the year 2025. The annual report highlights a significant increase in enforcement activities, primarily driven by a “zero-tolerance” policy toward life-threatening violations on city roads and National Highways.
The Statistics of Violation The Kurukshetra Traffic Police utilized both manual checking and the newly integrated e-challan system to track offenders.
-
Top Violations: The majority of the 2,40,000+ challans were issued for:
-
Riding without Helmets: Still the most common offense among youth.
-
Seatbelt Negligence: A major focus during highway patrols.
-
Overspeeding: Captured through interceptor vehicles on the NH-44.
-
Wrong-side Driving: A frequent cause of accidents in local markets.
-
-
Drunken Driving: Hundreds of licenses were recommended for suspension following special late-night “naka” drives.
Technology-Driven Enforcement A key factor in the high number of challans was the deployment of High-Definition CCTV cameras at major intersections like Pipli Chowk and the University Gate.
-
Automatic Detection: The “i-ITMS” (Intelligent Traffic Management System) automatically generated thousands of challans for red-light jumping and triple-riding, which were sent directly to the violators’ mobile phones.
-
Fine Collection: While the exact revenue figure is being finalized, officials estimate that several crores were collected in fines, which will be utilized for upgrading road safety infrastructure and installing new signages.
Official Commentary “Our objective is not to generate revenue but to save lives. The high number of challans reflects our commitment to making Kurukshetra’s roads safer for pedestrians and disciplined drivers,” a senior Kurukshetra police official stated. He noted that there has been a marginal decline in fatal accidents in the last quarter of 2025, which the department attributes to these stringent checking drives.
Road Ahead for 2026 Building on the 2025 data, the police have announced that 2026 will see a focus on “School Zone Safety.” Special drives will be conducted to ensure that school buses and private vans adhere to the safety norms prescribed under the “Surakshit School Vahan Policy.”
