Panchkula: Retired Army Officer Dies in Fatal Hit-and-Run

A routine morning walk turned fatal for a retired Army officer in Panchkula today after he was struck by an unidentified speeding vehicle. The incident, which took place in the early hours, has sparked concerns over road safety and the lack of surveillance in residential sectors during dawn.

The Incident The victim, a resident of Panchkula, was out for his daily walk when the accident occurred.

  • The Collision: According to eyewitness accounts from other morning walkers, a speeding vehicle hit the officer from behind and fled the scene immediately. The impact was so severe that the officer was thrown several feet away, sustaining grievous head injuries and multiple fractures.

  • Emergency Response: Passersby rushed to his aid and informed the police. He was transported to the Civil Hospital in Sector 6, where doctors declared him brought dead.

  • The Victim: The deceased has been identified as a retired high-ranking officer of the Indian Army. His family was notified shortly after the identification process was completed.

Police Investigation The Panchkula Police have registered a case against an unknown driver under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for causing death by negligence and rash driving.

  • CCTV Surveillance: Investigating officers are currently scanning footage from CCTV cameras installed at nearby intersections and residential gates to identify the make and registration number of the offending vehicle.

  • Forensic Evidence: Tire marks and debris from the crash site have been collected for forensic analysis. Police have also alerted nearby checkpoints and local garages to report any vehicle arriving with fresh front-end damage.

Community Outcry The incident has caused a wave of anger among local residents, who have been demanding better street lighting and increased police patrolling during morning and evening hours. “This is not the first time a hit-and-run has happened on these wide sector roads. Speeding remains a major issue that needs urgent intervention,” said a member of the local Residents’ Welfare Association (RWA).

The body of the officer has been sent for a post-mortem examination, following which it will be handed over to the family for the final rites.
