PWD Completes 80% of Pothole Repairs on GT Road Ahead of International Gita Mahotsav

As Kurukshetra prepares to welcome global pilgrims for the Gita Mahotsav, the Haryana PWD has delivered on its promise of transforming the state’s main arterial highway into a “carpet-smooth” corridor.

  • Strategic Priority: With the International Gita Mahotsav scheduled to see massive VVIP movement and heavy tourist footfall, the GT Road—the lifeline of Northern India—was prioritized under the ₹500 crore state-wide road maintenance package. The focus remained on the 100-km stretch between Sonepat and Ambala.

  • Tech-Driven Speed: Engineers utilized Velocity Patching and high-grade bituminous mixes to ensure that repairs are not just quick but durable against the heavy truck traffic characteristic of the GT Road. “Our teams have been working in dual shifts. Achieving 80% completion in such a short window was possible due to real-time monitoring via the H-Roads app,” said a senior PWD Executive Engineer.

  • Safety First: Beyond fixing potholes, the drive includes the repainting of thermoplastic road markings and the installation of reflective cat-eyes. These additions are critical for the safety of commuters during the early morning fog, for which a Yellow Alert was recently issued in the region.

  • Beautification of Entry Points: Special attention has been given to the entry points of Kurukshetra (Pipli) and Karnal. The service lanes, which often suffer from neglect, are being leveled to prevent bottlenecks during the high-traffic festival weeks.

Community Sentiment

“Usually, the GT Road stays in bad shape for months after the monsoon. But this time, the repair teams were very active. For us local commuters, the smooth road means less wear and tear on our vehicles and a much faster trip to the university or office. If the government maintains this speed for all internal roads, it will be a huge relief,” said a regular commuter from Panipat.
