Railway Ministry Approves 2-Minute Stoppage for Vande Bharat Express

The Sonipat Railway Station wore a festive look today as the long-standing demand for a Vande Bharat halt was finally fulfilled by the central government.

  • A Strategic Stoppage: For months, residents of Sonipat—a major educational and industrial hub—had been lobbying for the semi-high-speed train to stop at their station. Until now, travelers had to go to either New Delhi or Panipat to board the flagship train. The Railway Ministry’s approval for a 2-minute halt addresses this major gap in regional connectivity.

  • Celebrations on the Platform: As soon as the news broke, a large number of people gathered at the station. Local leaders and members of the Rail Yatri Sangathan distributed sweets and raised slogans in appreciation. “This is a historic day for Sonipat. The Vande Bharat will now make our city more accessible to investors and tourists alike,” said a local representative.

  • Benefits to Commuters: The stoppage will primarily serve the Delhi-Ambala-Chandigarh Vande Bharat route. With Sonipat being home to several universities and industrial estates (like Kundli and Rai), the 2-minute halt will save over an hour of travel time for premium commuters who previously relied on slower intercity trains or road transport.

  • Boost to Local Economy: Trade bodies believe that the “Vande Bharat effect” will lead to a rise in real estate demand and business activities around the station area. Improved connectivity is also expected to benefit the local hospitality sector.

  • Trial and Implementation: While the official approval was granted today, the actual implementation—including the updated timetable and ticket booking availability for the Sonipat station—is expected to commence within the next 48 to 72 hours.

  • Railway Statement: A senior Northern Railway official stated, “Technical feasibility studies were conducted before granting this halt. We expect high ridership from Sonipat, which justified the decision to include it in the schedule.”
