Southern Haryana Farmers Shift to Rabi Mode as Cooling Temperatures Trigger Mustard and Early Wheat Sowing

As the festive fervor of Diwali and Bhai Dooj winds down, the “Green Revolution” heartland is buzzing with a different energy. In southern Haryana, the traditional sound of temple bells has been replaced by the hum of seed-drills and tractors.

  • Climate Synergy: Agronomists from CCS Haryana Agricultural University (HAU) noted that the minimum temperature has finally dropped below the 18°C threshold at night, which is critical for preventing “seedling heat stress.”

  • Crop Focus – Mustard: Being a major oilseed hub, Mahendragarh is leading the charge. Popular varieties like RH 749 and RH 0749 are being favored for their high oil content and resistance to white rust. Farmers are racing to complete mustard sowing by the end of October to avoid the late-season aphid menace.

  • Early Wheat Varieties: In areas with better irrigation facilities, early-sown wheat varieties such as DBW 327 (Karan Shivani) and WH 1270 are being planted. These varieties have a longer vegetative phase, allowing them to better handle potential terminal heat waves in March.

  • Input Availability: Despite the holiday rush, the state government has ensured a steady supply of DAP (Di-Ammonium Phosphate) and certified seeds through cooperative societies (PACS). However, some local clusters in Palwal reported brief delays in fertilizer distribution due to the heavy festive traffic on state highways.

“The soil moisture from the late-season rains is perfect right now. If we wait too long, the moisture will evaporate and we’ll have to spend more on pre-sowing irrigation. For us, the real Diwali begins when the first green shoots appear in the field,” said a farmer from a village near Rewari.
