In a major boost to the state’s water security infrastructure, the World Bank has approved a loan of ₹5,700 crore for the ‘Jal Sanrakshit Haryana’ (Water Secure Haryana) project. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini after chairing a review meeting with officials on Saturday.

Objective: To make Haryana “self-reliant” in the water sector by modernizing infrastructure and promoting sustainable usage.

Timeline: The funds will be disbursed in phases between 2026 and 2032.

Canal Restoration: The project aims to restore 678 canals over the next five years.

Funding Split: ₹2,325 crore from World Bank, ₹2,230 crore from state budget, and ₹2,880 crore via NABARD.

Micro-Irrigation: ₹900 crore of the World Bank funds will be dedicated to implementing micro-irrigation systems across 70,000 acres.

Wastewater Reuse: Treated water from Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) in Jind, Kaithal, and Gurugram will be reused to irrigate 28,000 acres (Allocated: ₹600 crore).

Groundwater Recharge: Construction of 80 new water bodies, primarily in southern Haryana.

CM’s Vision Chief Minister Saini described the approval as a “paradigm shift” in the state’s water management. He emphasized that upon completion, the state’s entire canal network would be fully lined and capable of functioning efficiently for the next 25 years without requiring major repairs.
