In a major display of local vigilance, a group of farmers in Yamunanagar district intercepted three large trucks illegally transporting a massive consignment of 2,120 bags of agriculture-grade urea. The incident occurred late last night when the farmers, already concerned about potential urea shortages for the rabi season, noticed suspicious truck movements near the [Omitted – likely a border or industrial area].
The Interception The farmers reportedly blocked the path of the trucks and demanded to see the transit permits and delivery receipts.
-
The Consignment: Upon inspection, the trucks were found to be loaded with a total of 2,120 bags of subsidized agricultural urea.
-
Lack of Documentation: The drivers were unable to provide valid documents showing that the urea was intended for local primary agricultural credit societies (PACS) or authorized dealers.
-
Police Intervention: Following the confrontation, the farmers immediately informed the local police and officials from the Agriculture Department. The vehicles have been impounded and moved to the local police station for further investigation.
Suspected Smuggling for Industrial Use Agriculture department officials suspect that the urea was being diverted from the subsidized agricultural pool for industrial use.
-
Industrial Demand: Agri-grade urea is heavily subsidized by the government for farmers, while industrial-grade urea is significantly more expensive. This price gap often leads to illegal diversion to plywood and chemical industries in Yamunanagar.
-
Farmers’ Concern: “While we have to stand in queues for days to get a single bag of urea for our wheat crops, thousands of bags are being smuggled under the cover of night. We won’t let this happen,” said a spokesperson for the local farmers’ union.
Official Action The Deputy Director of Agriculture, Yamunanagar, has ordered a detailed audit of the stock from which this urea originated. An FIR has been registered against the truck owners and the suspected suppliers under the Essential Commodities Act and sections related to cheating and criminal conspiracy. The police are now tracing the source of the consignment and the intended destination to bust the larger racket.
