In a proud moment for Haryana’s agricultural community, Vijay Kumar, a progressive farmer from Jaidhar village in Yamunanagar district, was honoured as a special invitee at the 77th Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi. Popularly known as the “Haldi Man” (Turmeric Man) for his pioneering work in chemical-free cultivation, Kumar and his wife, Neerupa, were among the select few invited to witness the parade at Kartavya Path on January 26.
Recognition for Natural Farming
Vijay Kumar has emerged as a torchbearer for sustainable agriculture in the region.
-
The Invitation: He was selected by the central government in recognition of his outstanding contribution to promoting natural farming. A total of 12 farmers from Haryana were invited to the national event.
-
Ministerial Interaction: Following the parade, Kumar attended a special interaction and lunch hosted by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on January 27. The minister listened to his experiences and suggestions regarding chemical-free farming practices.
The ‘Haldi Man’s’ Journey
Kumar began his journey into natural farming in 2017, shifting away from conventional fertilizers and pesticides to address soil degradation and health concerns.
-
Crop Portfolio: He currently cultivates turmeric on 3.5 acres and practices natural farming on a total of 15-16 acres. His produce includes chemical-free wheat, sugarcane, guava, vegetables, and cold-pressed mustard oil.
-
Indigenous Methods: Kumar prepares all natural inputs on his farm, including Jeevamrit, Ghan Jeevamrit, Neemastr, and Brahmastr, using cow-based products from his two indigenous (Desi) cows.
-
Role Model: He credits Maharashtra Governor Acharya Devvrat as his inspiration for adopting and promoting these sustainable practices.
Impact & Vision
Vijay Kumar’s efforts have not only transformed his own fields but have also inspired neighbouring farmers to abandon harmful chemicals.
-
Quote: “My objective is not merely to earn money but to promote healthy food. Our society is like a family, and keeping the family healthy is our collective responsibility,” Kumar stated.
-
Warning: He cautioned that if chemical use continues unchecked, “in the future, our fields will grow diseases instead of crops.”
-
Community Building: To support other farmers, he has created a WhatsApp group to connect producers directly with buyers, ensuring better market access for chemical-free produce.
Official Praise
Dr. Aditya Pratap Dabas, Deputy Director of Agriculture, Yamunanagar, praised Kumar’s success, noting that his model demonstrates how natural farming can be both “sustainable and economically viable.”
