In one of the largest enforcement drives this year, the UHBVN (Electricity Department) targeted high-loss areas in Yamunanagar today to curb the menace of power theft. The operation began in the early hours of the morning to catch violators off-guard while they were still using illegal connections.
-
Targeted Raids: More than a dozen teams, comprising junior engineers and technical staff supported by police personnel, fanned out across 20 villages in the district. The focus was on areas where the gap between power supplied and revenue collected was significantly high.
-
Modus Operandi: Officials found that many consumers were bypassing their electricity meters or using direct wires (kundi) from the overhead transformers to run heavy appliances like air conditioners and tubewells.
-
Heavy Penalties: During the day-long drive, teams detected over 50 clear cases of power pilferage. Immediate fines were calculated based on the load being stolen, reaching a combined total of ₹60 lakh.
-
Strict Warning: UHBVN officials stated that FIRs would be registered at the specialized Irrigation & Power (I&P) police stations for those who fail to pay the fines promptly. “Electricity theft is a crime that burdens honest taxpayers. We are monitoring the load on every transformer to identify theft pockets,” said a senior Executive Engineer.
