A heavy police presence was witnessed in parts of Karnal city today as authorities scrambled to control rising tensions sparked by an inter-faith marriage. The situation turned sensitive after some right-wing organizations and family members of the woman gathered to protest, alleging foul play in the relationship.
-
The Flashpoint: The tension began when news of the marriage between a couple from different religious backgrounds became public. Protesters gathered in the neighborhood, raising slogans and demanding the “return” of the woman. They alleged that the marriage was part of a larger pattern of “Love Jihad,” a claim denied by the couple’s representatives.
-
Security Measures: Sensing a threat to communal harmony, senior police officials rushed to the spot. Heavy police pickets were installed at the entry and exit points of the colony. “Our primary goal is to ensure that no anti-social elements take advantage of the situation to incite violence,” said a senior police officer at the site.
-
Official Action: The police have been in contact with both families and religious leaders from both communities to mediate and de-escalate the anger. Surveillance has also been increased on social media to stop the spread of inflammatory messages or rumors that could worsen the situation in the district.
-
Couples’ Stand: Sources indicate that the couple, who are both adults, have sought police protection, stating that they married of their own free will. However, the protesters have demanded a thorough investigation into the matter under the state’s recently implemented anti-conversion laws.
