Sonipat Special Task Force Busts ‘Family’ Honeytrap Gang

Sep 15, 2025 | Haryana

The “glamour” of social media turned into a nightmare for several businessmen as Sonipat police exposed a sophisticated extortion racket today. The bust has sent shockwaves through the local business community due to the calculated nature of the crimes.

  • The Modus Operandi: The gang used attractive women to send friend requests to wealthy, older men on platforms like Instagram and Facebook. After weeks of “grooming” and friendly conversation, the victims were invited to a “date” at a pre-decided location—usually a rented apartment or a local hotel.

  • The Trap: Once inside, the gang used hidden cameras or mobile phones to record the victim in a compromising position. Moments later, other male members of the gang—acting as “family members” or “private detectives”—would barge into the room, accusing the businessman of misconduct and demanding massive sums of money to “settle” the matter.

  • Massive Extortion: In one documented case, the gang reportedly demanded ₹40 lakh from a local trader. Fearing social stigma and legal trouble, many victims paid thousands, and in some cases, lakhs, before one victim gathered the courage to approach the STF.

  • Family Involvement: Investigations revealed that the gang was led by a woman who involved her own son and daughters in the racket. This “family business” model helped them maintain secrecy and trust within the criminal group.

  • Police Action: Undercover officers posed as a “target” to catch the gang red-handed during a money exchange. Police seized several mobile phones containing incriminating videos, fake ID cards, and a portion of the extorted cash.
