The festive season has officially hit the high streets of Haryana. Three weeks before the festival of lights, consumers are already out in force, signaling a robust season for retail after a year of inflationary concerns.

Panipat: The Furnishing Hub: In the “City of Weavers,” markets like Insar Bazaar and the Quilla Road area were teeming with families. Footwear, kitchenware, and Panipat’s signature bedsheets and curtains were the top-selling items. Traders noted that many customers are “early birds” trying to avoid the extreme crowds and price hikes expected later in the month.
-
Ambala: The Textile Magnet: The Ambala City Cloth Market, one of the largest in Asia, recorded tens of thousands of visitors today. “The Sunday rush was exceptional. We haven’t seen this level of energy this early in October for at least two years,” said a spokesperson for the Ambala Beopar Mandal.

Trader Sentiment: * Footfall: Reported 30% higher than average weekends.
-
Consumer Behavior: There is a noticeable shift toward premium clothing and traditional ethnic wear.
-
Wholesale vs. Retail: While wholesale orders were shipped out in September, today was dominated by retail family shoppers.

Logistical Challenges: The heavy rush resulted in a complete lack of parking spaces in Ambala’s interior lanes. In Panipat, the Gohana Road and GT Road approach lanes saw slow-moving traffic throughout the afternoon. Local police had to implement one-way traffic rules in several market pockets to prevent complete gridlock.

Digital Payments Surge: Traders also highlighted that over 80% of transactions today were conducted via UPI, reducing the traditional “cash-only” friction and allowing for faster billing despite the heavy crowds.
Economic Outlook: Economists suggest that the early rush is a positive indicator for the state’s economy. With the harvest season nearing and agricultural income expected to flow in, traders in both cities are optimistic that this year’s total Diwali turnover will break previous records, potentially exceeding ₹500 crore in these two districts alone.
