Experts Predict Bumper Mustard Yield as Haryana Leads Oilseed Revolution

Nov 9, 2025 | Haryana

The fields of South Haryana are turning into a laboratory for India’s self-reliance in edible oils. As the sowing window for the Rabi season draws to a close, all indicators point toward a “Golden Revolution” in mustard production.

  • Strategic Shift: Agriculture Minister Shyam Singh Rana noted that the area under mustard cultivation in Haryana is expected to breach the 10 lakh hectare mark this year. Districts like Mahendragarh and Rewari have seen a nearly 15% shift from wheat to mustard.

  • Seed Sovereignty: A major factor behind the success has been the proactive distribution of certified seeds through the HSDC (Haryana Seed Development Corporation). Over 2 lakh mini-kits of improved varieties were distributed to small and marginal farmers in September and October, ensuring uniform germination across the state.

  • Expert Outlook: Scientists from CCS Haryana Agricultural University (HAU) highlight that the current temperature dip and adequate soil moisture are “textbook conditions” for the vegetative growth of the mustard plant. “If we avoid severe white rust and the weather remains dry during the flowering stage in December, we are looking at a yield of over 22–25 quintals per hectare,” said a senior agronomist.

  • Financial Incentive: The state’s commitment to purchase 100% of the produce at the revised MSP of ₹5,950/quintal—the highest among major oilseed-producing states—has acted as a massive psychological boost for growers, who previously feared price volatility in private markets.

“Last year, we struggled with seed quality, but this time, the government packets reached our village coop ten days before the sowing date. The plants are already looking stronger. Mustard takes three waterings compared to wheat’s six, so we are saving our tubewell water and expecting a better bank balance come March,” said a farmer from a village in Bhiwani.
