After days of mounting garbage piles and public outcry, the industrial hub of Faridabad is set to return to cleanliness following a breakthrough in talks between the municipal administration and the sanitation workers’ union.
-
The Core Grievance: Hundreds of sanitation workers had stopped work last week, protesting against the non-payment of salaries for the last two months and the delay in regularizing contractual employees. The strike had severely impacted waste collection in major sectors and the Old Faridabad area.
-
The Negotiation: The Municipal Commissioner held a high-level meeting with the representatives of the Nagar Nigam Safai Karamchari Sangh. The Commissioner explained that the delay was due to a technical glitch in the state’s centralized fund allocation system but confirmed that the budget has now been sanctioned.

Assurances Given:
-
Salary Release: Full payment of pending salaries for October and November to be credited by December 14.
-
Safety Gear: The MCF committed to distributing new sets of safety gloves, masks, and uniforms by the end of the month.
-
Regularization Dialogue: A committee will be formed to review the demands for the regularization of long-term contractual workers.
-
-
Immediate Resumption of Work: The union leaders expressed satisfaction with the written commitment. “Our intent was never to harass the public, but we cannot work on empty stomachs. We are returning to duty immediately to clear the city’s waste,” said a union spokesperson.
-
Action Plan: The MCF has deployed additional trucks and JCB machines to assist the workers in clearing the “black spots” where garbage had piled up during the strike. Residents are requested to cooperate as the cleaning process may take 2-3 days to reach full normalcy.
