A tragic accident unfolded near Jyotisar on Tuesday when a speeding car plunged into the SYL canal, resulting in the death of a 20-year-old girl and leaving a 21-year-old youth feared drowned. The deceased has been identified as Arushi, a resident of Pehowa and a student at Kurukshetra University. The missing youth, identified as Varun Singla, also from Pehowa, is a BBA student in Chandigarh.
According to police reports, the incident occurred when the vehicle, allegedly driven by Varun, lost control and fell into the waterbody. Eyewitnesses claimed that after the car plunged into the canal, Varun managed to exit the vehicle but was swept away by the strong current. Arushi, however, was trapped inside.
Upon receiving the information, police officials and divers launched an immediate rescue operation. The car was eventually fished out, and Arushi’s body was recovered from inside the vehicle. She was rushed to the LNJP District Civil Hospital, where she was declared dead. Her body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.
In-charge of the Jyotisar Police Post, Sandeep Kumar, stated that Varun’s family identified the car based on documents found inside. “Varun’s father stated that his son had gone shopping in the car but expressed unawareness about the girl accompanying him,” Kumar said. Divers led by Pargat Singh are continuing the search operation to trace Varun, but the swift flow of the water has hampered efforts.
