SULTANPUR LODHI, KAPURTHALA – A unique ‘Green Nagar Kirtan’ was successfully organized in Sultanpur Lodhi, Kapurthala, on Sunday to commemorate the upcoming 556th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji (Guru Nanak Jayanti on November 5).
The procession, attended by Rajya Sabha MP and noted environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal, distinguished itself by replacing the usual religious prasad distribution with an ecological gesture: the giveaway of 5,600 saplings to the attendees and the congregation.
Addressing Flood-Affected Areas: The Green Nagar Kirtan began at Ahli Khurd and traveled through the Mand area’s flood-affected villages in Sultanpur Lodhi. This choice of route served to highlight the devastating effects of the recent floods while promoting recovery; reports confirm that wheat-sowing has now commenced in the region following the destruction.
MP Seechewal, who actively participated in the procession and distributed plants, issued a directive calling for concrete actions to ensure the continuous greening of Punjab’s environment. The practice of distributing saplings during nagar kirtans in Punjab was originally initiated by Seechewal himself in 2008, promoting environmental stewardship alongside religious observance.
Faculty members, students, and former students have voiced concerns that the Senate and Syndicate were the only forums where the university’s diverse stakeholders—including faculty, students, and alumni—could express their views on policy and administration.
